Saints Own Texas, Tie Record With Eighth Consecutive Regular Season Road Win In 5-2 Victory

Jun 4, 2015

GRAND PRAIRIE, TX (June 3, 2015) – There has never been a roadtrip like this in the history of the St. Paul Saints.  The high school roadtrip, which happens every year as the team vacates their home because of the high school tournament, is always the longest of the season.  It started with a loss in Amarillo, but with the 5-2 win on Wednesday night at QuickTrip Park against the Grand Prairie AirHogs the Saints won for the eighth consecutive time tying the longest regular season road winning streak in team history.  They finished 8-1 on the trip and are now 12-1 on the season, the best start in franchise history.

The Saints jumped out to the lead in the third and never looked back.  With one out Alonzo Harris walked.  He moved to second on a single by Mitch Elliott and the Saints loaded the bases on a single by Willie Argo.  That brought up Ian Gac, who reached out and poked one to center which scored Harris and Elliott to make it 2-0.  Mike Kvasnicka’s sacrifice fly made it 3-0 and Angelo Songco’s RBI single made it 4-0.

That was more than enough for Jeff Shields who was masterful.  The lone mistake he made came in the seventh when he gave up a two-run homer to Victor Ferrante, his first of the season, to make it 4-2.  Shields hurled 7.0 innings allowing two runs on seven hits and setting a career high by striking out nine.

As the Saints had done the previous two games they got an insurance run late.  In the ninth Harris reached on a throwing error by second baseman Jamodrick McGruder.  Harris moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Elliott.  Argo dropped a single into right scoring Harris to give the Saints a three run cushion.  Argo finished the night 3-5 with a double, RBI and a run scored.

During their eight game winning streak the Saints have trailed for a total of five innings.  The eighth consecutive regularly season road winning streak ties the record set from August 3-25, 2007.  The Saints would win three consecutive road playoff games that year as well.  The eight game winning streak overall ties the second longest winning streak within one season.  The Saints last won eight in a row last season from July 18-25.  They won 10 in a row from June 17-28, 2007.  The longest winning streak is 12, but that carried over from the end of 2007 to the beginning of 2008.

The Saints have Thursday off and will take on the Sioux Falls Canaries on Friday night at CHS Field.  The Saints send LHP Pedro Hernandez (1-1, 4.50) to the mound while the Canaries are TBA.  It is Xcel Energy Friday Night Fireworks with the music of the Grateful Dead.  The game can be seen on the Saints Cable Network, cable access channels in the Twin Cities, and heard on Club 1220 KLBB.
