Two-Out Base Hits Hurt Saints in 6-2 Loss Thur.

07/29/2010 9:19 PM -
ST. PAUL, MN (July 29, 2010) – The St. Paul Saints couldn’t quite follow the blue print from Wednesday night’s win over the Sioux Falls Pheasants as they allowed each of the Pheasants runs to score with two outs in a 6-2 loss on Thursday night at Midway Stadium in front of 5,292.

The Saints jumped out to the early 2-0 lead in the second as Jason Cooper led off with a single to right. With one out Brent Krause doubled him home. With two outs Josh Petersen knocked home Krause, but that would be the last of the highlights for the Saints offense.

Saints starter Jason Godin cruised through the first four innings, but in the fifth the league’s top offense capitalized on a miscue and came through with two out base hit after two out base hit. Eddy Rodriguez led off by reaching on a fielding error from third baseman Petersen. Joe Anthonsen reached on a fielder’s choice and Tim Hutting flew out for the second out of the inning. Instead of being out of the inning, however, Anthonsen stole second and scored on a bloop single from Kevin Carby to make it 2-1. Carby, who wasn’t even in the starting line up, but came in the game after Reggie Abercrombie left the game after being hit on the hand, drove in two runs on the night. Beau Torbert then deposited one over the left field wall for a two-run homer, his 17th of the season, giving the Pheasants a 3-2 lead. Brandon Sing followed with a double and Trevor Lawhorn slugged a two-run homer to left, his 14th homer of the season giving the Pheasants a 5-2 lead. Sing finished the night 4-5 with three doubles and a run scored.

The Pheasants tacked on an insurance run in the eighth when Rodriguez led off with a single to left, moved to second on a sacrifice from Anthonsen and scored on Casrby’s two-out single.

The Saints and Pheasants meet in game three of the four game series Friday night at 7:05 p.m. at Midway Stadium. The Saints send RHP Kyle Foster (1-5, 3.99) to the mound against Pheasants RHP Ben Moore (9-5, 2.82). It is “Game of the Living Dead” Night. The game can be seen on the Saints Cable Network (check saintsbaseball.com for the channel in your area) and heard on Relevant Radio 1330.
